Sustainability

Sustainability in all aspect is very important, especially the environmental sustainability of our planet Earth. Environmental sustainability involves us as a nation to take actions and make decisions to protect the world’s environment from many dangers that we caused (SmallBizConnect, n.d.).  No individual person is at fault but the whole population including businesses and individuals who are realizing the full impact that they have on the environment (SmallBixConnect, n.d.). There are many dangers that are caused to the environment such as air pollution, water pollution, deforestation and natural landmark. Many of the dangers are usually caused by using too much fossil fuels and building over areas where trees once grew. In Hong Kong the air is polluted, however from previous experience when my family and I visited Hong Kong you could hardly tell except for when it was cloudy. In other countries, such as Japan you can tell because you the smoke can be seen from the factories mixing in the air.

In the world today, environmental sustainability is a popular topic that is discussed in the media and the government (SmallBizConnect, n.d.). This is because of the rising temperature in Australia and the bushfires that are sometimes caused by the hotter temperature is due to climate change.

To enable the environment to be more sustainable, measure to reducing the impacts on the environment needs to be taken into consideration. The government are currently making short term implications to help reduce the impact on the environment as long term implications of the issues cannot be yet understood (SmallBizConnect, n.d.). Mainly business need to contribute more to environmental sustainability as they are the main producers of the cause and they are in a position where they can make a significant difference to the damage.

Asia and Australia engagement with Asia

Asia and Australia have had many engagements with Asia through a variety of different things. Australia engagement with Asia includes trade, investment, education, language capability, defence and strategic policy (The Spinney Press, 2013). In many shops and supermarkets there are many items that are made or produced from China, Vietnam and Taiwan. Nearly everything that is sold in a supermarket is produced overseas in Asia. Asia is the main country Australia import goods from overseas and it is also where many of our tourists come to either experience the culture or have their children or themselves be educated. Australia belief system is not much different to most Asian countries as they believe in Christianity.

Asia themselves engage with other Asian countries to import or trade goods. In Japan when I went in 2012 most of the goods that I saw where either made in China or Vietnam as products from those countries can be made more cheaper than in their own country. Tourism is also the same where most tourists in other Asian countries, especially China visit other countries. Around the Christmas holidays, Hong Kong have many tourists from China that come and visit famous attractions. It’s because of the tourist that the three main languages you hear in many areas are Cantonese, Chinese and English. Mainly to the whole world, Asia especially China is the main imports of good for many countries which provides a close connection with them.

Australia and Asia culture, society and environment is very different. Most Asian countries environment have buildings with very little greenery and homes crowded together. This is different to Australia where homes spacious spread with lots of greenery and buildings. Culture belief and the behaviour of the society differ as people belief and behaviour are different between countries. Australia is still improving it's engagement with Asia.

Aboriginal and Toress Strait Islander histories and cultures

(ChuulaMedia, 2011) Using fire to control the bush growth
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander have been looking after the land for hundreds of years by using natural resources found on the land. Aboriginal people use natural water and food that are found on the land to survive throughout the year. I remember in primary school when the teachers taught us about Aboriginal culture I was a bit amazed that they were able to survive by just using natural resources from the land. Aboriginal people used fire to control and predict plant growth so they could attract animals for hunting (Korff, n.d.). They used the land resources to live with the land which would have a more sustainably impact to the environment. They are connected with their country, people, culture and identity, finding all four aspect really import to their life.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people would pass down knowledge about survival using the land from generation to generation. However ever since the European settlers arrived, their traditional homelands have been decreasing. Australia history with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was a cruel history as the native of the land were often denied to their land and were sometimes killed. In 2012 for an assignment for modern history I was shocked about the details of The Myall Creek Massacre in 1838. The details about how the black people were killed deeply upset and horrify me how people could kill another depending on their skin colour.

Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander want to remain connected to their land even them being relocated to different areas (Amnesty International Australia, 2011). Some have become natural farmers and land rangers where they could be on their homeland and control the environment (ChuulaMedia, 2011).
